Undrawing Workshop

$95.00

Undrawing Charlotte II

Join us for a second installment of the marvelous Undrawing the Figure workshop with Alex Alford @undrawingworkshop @alexdrawslife at Rosa's Nativa Studio in Matthews, NC.

The basic premise of Undrawing is that we have an innate sense of spatial geometry; it’s why we can catch a ball or see when a picture frame is crooked. This awareness can be leveraged to allow us to draw from life quickly and accurately, using triangulation to establish proportions and simple marks to express light, shadow, and mass. Once you internalize these principles, there’s nothing you see that you won’t be able to draw in any medium.

Alex has taught one-day Undrawing Workshops across the US and Europe since 2021. They're fun, fast-paced, data-dense experiences. For this workshop at Rosa's, all materials will be provided. We're limiting attendance to 8 people, this time, to give everyone a little more space to move. Posing for this workshop will be the fantastic Teyani.

Date: Saturday, July 25, 1-4pm.

Cost: $95 in advance, $125 at the door (space permitting)

Materials (provided): Soft pastels, newsprint paper, boards and clips.

About Alex

Alex has been drawing the figure from life for nearly half a century; he never shies from a blank page.
A few years before the pandemic, in an effort to learn to draw more quickly and accurately, he recorded his drawing process. In studying these videos, as an athlete might learn from video analysis of a golf swing or a running gait, he identified specific - if unconscious - actions and motions which, when he leaned into them, resulted in dramatic improvements in speed and verisimilitude. These became the core of Undrawing, the approach he teaches.

The name, Undrawing, derives from the idea of undrawing heavy drapes from windows to let light into a darkened room. It’s about illumination. Undrawing techniques are just as straightforward and easily assimilable.

Undrawing workshops are fun, focused, data-rich experiences that delight and transform. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned explorer, you’ll have a great time.
