DREAMCATCHER LABYRINTH - CIAF 2023
"My goal with this project is to honor Native American cultures and dreams."
I am thrilled to have been selected as the Blumenthal Arts Fellow for the Charlotte International Arts Festival 2023. My proposed project, "Dreamcatcher," is an interactive art installation that includes a meditative walking labyrinth.
Dreamcatcher Labyrinth is an interactive design that pays tribute to Native American culture by drawing inspiration from dreamcatchers. The labyrinth is a meditative walking experience that encourages visitors to connect with nature. The path is forty feet in diameter and shaped like a dreamcatcher, made of yellow rubber tiles placed over the grass. At the center of the labyrinth, visitors will discover the "dream machine", a repurposed installation art made from an antique cast iron bed and long pieces of gauze fabric and white cotton yarn. The yarn is woven into the frame, resembling a spider web, and tied into ten repurposed cannon balls around the bed structure, symbolizing peace, rights, and freedom for Indigenous Peoples of the Americas. The center of the installation is built with scrap metal pieces and a ladder with colorful acrylic tiles on the sides representing all the Native American tribes. The top of the ladder features a whimsical metal propel designed to keep bad dreams away and capture the beauty of the dream world.
